Irish Rover Awards

Of all the products to come out of Ireland, probably the best known, the most talked about is Guinness. There are so many myths and legends surrounding it that it is hard, if not almost impossible to run a real Irish pub without it.

Ever since it came into being, Guinness has been talked about, written about, praised, in fact almost worshiped by Irish people and foreigners alike. Here are some of the more famous literary quotes:

"Like dark sleep, it knits up the revelled sleeve of care, and, what is an achievement, it wastes the time that might, if we were not drinking, be devoted to scheming, posing, hypocrisy and money making".  Oliver St John Gogarty
Jem Casey even dedicated an entire poem to the wonders of Guinness, which he recited to his friends in At Swim Two Birds:

"The Workmans Friend"

When things go wrong and will not come right,
Though you do the best you can,
When life looks black as the hour of night -
A pint of plain is your only man.

When money's tight and hard to get
And your horse has also ran,
When all you have is a heap of debt -
A pint of plain is your only man.

When health is bad and your heart feels strange,
And your face is pale and wan,
When doctors say you need a change,
A pint of plain is your only man.

When food is scarce and your larder bare
And no rashers grease your pan,
When hunger grows as your meals are rare -
A pint of plain is your only man.

In time of trouble and lousey strife,
You have still got a darlint plan
You still can turn to a brighter life -
A pint of plain is your only man.

-- Flann O'Brien (Brian O'Nolan)
Official Awards - The Irish Rover - Hamburg's most traditional Irish pub
Guinness themselves, are so proud of their product that they go to great lengths to make sure that every pint you get is just perfect, and still the comment which you will frequently hear from Irish people sitting at a bar abroad is "Guinness doesn't travel" .... this is perhaps the biggest myth of all. There is no reason why your pint should not taste just like it does in Dublin, and here is why:

Our Guinness, like all Guinness in Germany, comes directly from St. James' Gate in Dublin, where it is brewed to the highest of standards. Once in Germany, it is down to us, the publicans to ensure that we look after so that you get the very best pint. Storage temperature, clean lines, clean glasses, special pouring procedures, etc etc ....quite a long list in fact.

It is also the job of the Guinness representatives here in Germany to ensure that we publicans are living up to those expectations, which is why they regularly call around to perform quality checks on their product. The awards above should signal to you that we are pretty good at looking after our Guinness. The perfect pint award, of which we are very proud was presented to us for the best pint in Germany...
